Definitions

The following definitions are what politico-cat will henceforth use in articles found in this blog. b : a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change; specifically : such a philosophy calling for lower taxes, limited government regulation of business and investing, a strong national defense, and individual financial responsibility for personal needs (such as retirement income or health-care coverage).

Getting a Job You Want

Introduction

At almost 80 years old, with what some may call a successful career in both Software Engineering and Management, I believe I can offer some advice regarding getting a job. I have, of course, written many resumes some of which were good and others fell flat. Also, as a manager, I have reviewed 100s of resumes and had to give a yes or no to whether the company needed to bring a candidate in for an interview. In this article I will try to present some opinions and rules applicable to presenting yourself in a resume, and some do's and don't during the interview. Some Human Resource departments suggest that you use one page resumes. Forget them. There is no way to present yourself on one page to a manager for whom you wish to work.

Rules and Suggestions

  1. Be Honest. The employer you want to work for looks for integrity in its employees.
  2. Write your own resume. Certainly there are professional resume writers that will take your money to write one for you. However, you are presenting yourself and the best way is to do it yourself.
  3. Have someone review it for spelling, grammar, and understandability. Don't change the style unless the criticism makes a lot of sense.

Process

Obviously getting the desirable job is, particularly a sometimes painful process. One piece of advice, among many, that I received from a seminar on getting a job when I was unemployed, was to consider the process a job and approach it as I would a regular job. It requires an investment of time and some cost. The steps are fairly straight forward.

  1. Preparation of Resume.
  2. Listing Targets to Send Resumes. Flooding the job market, even though required by misguided unemployment agencies and head-hunters, is not the best approach. Find employers for whom you would like to work and concentrate your efforts on them.
  3. Sending or Delivering Resumes. If you have a contact in a target hand deliver a resume to that contact. Often this is a way to bypass the Human Resource departments who have their own rules for evaluating candidates.
  4. Interview
  5. Dealing with Rejection Letters.
  6. Follow Up.

Resume

Consider the Resume as three separate sections, the Cover Letter, the Optional Information Page, and the Body of the Resume.

Cover Letter

In as much as possible, you should write a personal letter. If you know a management person in the department, address them as the relationship permits. If the association is casual, you may wish to explain how and when you met the manager. If referred by someone, let the manager know where you got his name. Letters to the Human Resources departments may be very short form letters giving the reviewer what kind of job you are seeking.

Optional Information Page

This page is essentially an advertisement and presents something unique. Pictures of completed projects are useful. Incidents during your life, or anything that may make an impression of the decision maker. One job I got was from a page I included with "Ten Reasons to Hire a 60 Year Old Programmer"

Resume Body

Again, remember this is a presentation of you. The following subjects and their order, are suggestions based on how I reviewed resumes. Often the section, while not required, made the difference in whether we called in a person for an interview. Pictures are useful. Even though not required, they help sell your capabilities. In addition to a picture of you, pictures of projects in the Notable Projects section can be useful.

Personal Information

A short statement of what you wish to do.

List of Skills

The list should be brief and all skills in which you are highly skilled, experienced, trained, and exposed. For example, I could report that under highly skilled my skills are Python, C++, C, Pascal, Modula 2, Fortran, Assembler. Under experienced I could list CNC. Exposed, I could list Cobol and RPG.

Notable Projects

This is usually a departure from what HR departments usually evaluate. However, if the resume gets to the desk of a manager it tends to be the most important. It should include a project name, the objective of the project, and its results. If there is a $ savings to the company that can be estimated (one of my projects resulted in $1 million savings a year in producing a product), include that information. If the project resulted in better performance in a product, that also should be included. It is acceptable to list projects in which you were a member of a team, but outline your responsibilities.

Positions

Chronologically list positions and organizations for which you worked.

Available Tools

If you have a collection of tools that can be used, describe those. For example I now have a laptop computer with several development packages like Qt4, Qt5, and Arduino as well as several special Integrated Development Environments. Additionally I have 3 Raspberry Pi computers and one Teensy 3.1 microprocessor boards which I would list.

Additional Interests

Voluntary organizations, hobbies, what kind of music you like, sports activities.

Interview

I'm old fashioned. For professional employees I suggest a conservative suit or an outfit that is suitable for the position. For technical positions, clean well fitting cloths. Answer questions in as few words as possible. If the interviewer is working from your resume, as he should be, he should only be asking for clarification. Resist bad mouthing a previous employer, but answer the interviewers questions about your experience in previous positions. Take ownership of your failures as well as your successes, if asked.

Follow Up

No one bothers to deal with rejection. However, I suggest that after you are told there is no job for you and they used the tried rejection "We don't have a position at this time but we will keep your resume on file." Take them at their word and write a thank you for your consideration letter or email. Then, if you haven't received a job in a couple of weeks, send a package (Resume) again, mentioning your previous rejection.

I Apologize

To the young people I will be leaving behind.

When you get older you realize that there are some things in life you should have done differently.  There are some things I did as a young person that I now regret because I knew then and now that they were wrong.  All in all, and given the circumstances of my life, i do not regret the path I took.  I am blessed with a loving wife, two beautiful daughters, two exceptional sons in law, and two wonderful grandchildren.

But, looking at my life with 20-20 hind-sight there are some activities I should have taken on, and some battles I should have fought.  The principle of which I am reminded each time I visit http://usdebtclock.org.  Maybe through my failures the young readers of this article may avoid the mistakes I made.

I did not take history seriously enough.  Even though I studied the historical documents of the United States, volunteered to served in the armed forces, voted in most of the elections, served as a jurer, learned about other economic system, and even served as an election pole official, I should have been more vocal and pushed my beliefs about our way of life more.  It is a delicate matter to express your beliefs and yet maintain the attention of those you are trying to convince.  Maybe by being more strident, I could have done more. Maybe I should have made my "One-Man March" to Washington in support of the National Retail Sales Tax, now known as the fair tax, I could have convinced more voters to embrace a solution to our smothering tax system. Maybe, by publicly opposing laws that I feel were not authorized by our founders in the constitution, I could have gained the attention or more of my generation and convinced them that we should have done sooner.

I have lived through an era that saw more advances in the standard of living than any time else in history.  The automobile was just beginning to become the primary mode of transport, the television became available to about everyone,  air conditioned houses were not available (the church I attended had  the first that I remember -- but it consisted of a basement with large metal pans that held ice for the local ice plant), and we shared our telephone with 4 other neighbors that were connected to the same wire.  That history presented me with the temptation to gain more wealth, provide more for my family, and try to improve my status in my community.

Unfortunately, following the course I did caused be to neglect action on a more important aspect of my children and grandchildrens future, their freedom.  The average tax-payer now spends 40% or more of his  working time to pay for government.  That is a form of slavery.

However, it is getting worse:

I hate to be the predictor of doom and gloom, but --

In the next year, if nothing is done, you will see:
Unfortunately, these are only the short term things we will see.  History has taught us that once our producers stop producing and the citizens are demanding more largesse from the government, the country is on its way to a dictatorship or some kind of authoritarian government where freedoms are denied and the wealth is placed in the hands of the few.  Russia, Cuba, and Venezuela come to mind. The attempts to mix freedom with authoritarian governments have not been particularly successful.  Check out any country in Europe.

The young people are the hope of our freedom.  The service of our fighting men holds out the hope that this generation can and will do what your elders have failed to do and that is to restore the United States to its greatness by restoring its citizens'  freedom.  But you must either start now to avoid the necessity of revolution and the suffering that accompanies it.

What must you do?

Study your history.  Understand the capitalistic system, its strengths and weaknesses.  Understand how it creates wealth.  Understand the socialist economic system, its strengths and weaknesses and why it fails.

Participate, run for office, demand of your officials integrity, and vote.  Do not listen to what they say, watch what they do.  Look at those whom they surround themselves.

Do not concentrate your energy on managing the trees without understanding what is happening to the forest, like I did.

Don't be afraid to re-examine our constitution and our laws even to the extent that they should be thrown out and the system be restarted.  Our President and members of his cabinet have already inferred that our Constitution is not the supreme law of the land.

Don't be afraid to reject the two party system.  Voting for the "lesser of two evils" is still voting for evil.  A compromise with evil is still evil.

May God be with you.

Letter to Glenn Beck

The following letter was sent to Glenn Beck.  Since the Glen Beck site was shut down by interested people wishing to read it, we are publishing it here.  There is a site that will enable you to add your name to a petition based on this letter.  If for some reason this site is swamped, copy this page and send it to the President, your representative and your two senators.  Click here to go to the petition.

The Letter

I'm a home grown American citizen, 53, registered Democrat all my life. Before the last presidential election I registered as a Republican because I no longer felt the Democratic Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. Now I no longer feel the Republican Party represents my views or works to pursue issues important to me. The fact is I no longer feel any political party or representative in Washington represents my views or works to pursue the issues important to me. There must be someone. Please tell me who you are. Please stand up and tell me that you are there and that you're willing to fight for our Constitution as it was written. Please stand up now. You might ask yourself what my views and issues are that I would horribly feel so disenfranchised by both major political parties. What kind of nut job am I? Will you please tell me?

Well, these are briefly my views and issues for which I seek representation:

One, illegal immigration. I want you to stop coddling illegal immigrants and secure our borders. Close the underground tunnels. Stop the violence and the trafficking in drugs and people. No amnesty, not again. Been there, done that, no resolution. P.S., I'm not a racist. This isn't to be confused with legal immigration.

Glenn Beck's Common Sense
Now available in book stores nationwide...

Two, the TARP bill, I want it repealed and I want no further funding supplied to it. We told you no, but you did it anyway. I want the remaining unfunded 95% repealed. Freeze, repeal.

Three: Czars, I want the circumvention of our checks and balances stopped immediately. Fire the czars. No more czars. Government officials answer to the process, not to the president. Stop trampling on our Constitution and honor it.

Four, cap and trade. The debate on global warming is not over. There is more to say.

Five, universal healthcare. I will not be rushed into another expensive decision. Don't you dare try to pass this in the middle of the night and then go on break. Slow down!

Six, growing government control. I want states rights and sovereignty fully restored. I want less government in my life, not more. Shrink it down. Mind your own business. You have enough to take care of with your real obligations. Why don't you start there.

Seven, ACORN. I do not want ACORN and its affiliates in charge of our 2010 census. I want them investigated. I also do not want mandatory escrow fees contributed to them every time on every real estate deal that closes. Stop the funding to ACORN and its affiliates pending impartial audits and investigations. I do not trust them with taking the census over with our taxpayer money. I don't trust them with our taxpayer money. Face up to the allegations against them and get it resolved before taxpayers get any more involved with them. If it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, hello. Stop protecting your political buddies. You work for us, the people. Investigate.

Eight, redistribution of wealth. No, no, no. I work for my money. It is mine. I have always worked for people with more money than I have because they gave me jobs. That is the only redistribution of wealth that I will support. I never got a job from a poor person. Why do you want me to hate my employers? Why ?? what do you have against shareholders making a profit?

Nine, charitable contributions. Although I never got a job from a poor person, I have helped many in need. Charity belongs in our local communities, where we know our needs best and can use our local talent and our local resources. Butt out, please. We want to do it ourselves.

Ten, corporate bailouts. Knock it off. Sink or swim like the rest of us. If there are hard times ahead, we'll be better off just getting into it and letting the strong survive. Quick and painful. Have you ever ripped off a Band?Aid? We will pull together. Great things happen in America under great hardship. Give us the chance to innovate. We cannot disappoint you more than you have disappointed us.

Eleven, transparency and accountability. How about it? No, really, how about it? Let's have it. Let's say we give the buzzwords a rest and have some straight honest talk. Please try ?? please stop manipulating and trying to appease me with clever wording. I am not the idiot you obviously take me for. Stop sneaking around and meeting in back rooms making deals with your friends. It will only be a prelude to your criminal investigation. Stop hiding things from me.

Twelve, unprecedented quick spending. Stop it now.

Take a breath. Listen to the people. Let's just slow down and get some input from some nonpoliticians on the subject. Stop making everything an emergency. Stop speed reading our bills into law. I am not an activist. I am not a community organizer. Nor am I a terrorist, a militant or a violent person. I am a parent and a grandparent. I work. I'm busy. I'm busy. I am busy, and I am tired. I thought we elected competent people to take care of the business of government so that we could work, raise our families, pay our bills, have a little recreation, complain about taxes, endure our hardships, pursue our personal goals, cut our lawn, wash our cars on the weekends and be responsible contributing members of society and teach our children to be the same all while living in the home of the free and land of the brave.

I entrusted you with upholding the Constitution. I believed in the checks and balances to keep from getting far off course. What happened? You are very far off course. Do you really think I find humor in the hiring of a speed reader to unintelligently ramble all through a bill that you signed into law without knowing what it contained? I do not. It is a mockery of the responsibility I have entrusted to you. It is a slap in the face. I am not laughing at your arrogance. Why is it that I feel as if you would not trust me to make a single decision about my own life and how I would live it but you should expect that I should trust you with the debt that you have laid on all of us and our children. We did not want the TARP bill. We said no. We would repeal it if we could. I am sure that we still cannot. There is such urgency and recklessness in all of the recent spending.

From my perspective, it seems that all of you have gone insane. I also know that I am far from alone in these feelings. Do you honestly feel that your current pursuits have merit to patriotic Americans? We want it to stop. We want to put the brakes on everything that is being rushed by us and forced upon us. We want our voice back. You have forced us to put our lives on hold to straighten out the mess that you are making. We will have to give up our vacations, our time spent with our children, any relaxation time we may have had and money we cannot afford to spend on you to bring our concerns to Washington. Our president often knows all the right buzzword is unsustainable. Well, no kidding. How many tens of thousands of dollars did the focus group cost to come up with that word? We don't want your overpriced words. Stop treating us like we're morons.

We want all of you to stop focusing on your reelection and do the job we want done, not the job you want done or the job your party wants done. You work for us and at this rate I guarantee you not for long because we are coming. We will be heard and we will be represented. You think we're so busy with our lives that we will never come for you? We are the formerly silent majority, all of us who quietly work , pay taxes, obey the law, vote, save money, keep our noses to the grindstone and we are now looking up at you. You have awakened us, the patriotic spirit so strong and so powerful that it had been sleeping too long. You have pushed us too far. Our numbers are great. They may surprise you. For every one of us who will be there, there will be hundreds more that could not come. Unlike you, we have their trust. We will represent them honestly, rest assured. They will be at the polls on voting day to usher you out of office. We have cancelled vacations. We will use our last few dollars saved. We will find the representation among us and a grassroots campaign will flourish. We didn't ask for this fight. But the gloves are coming off. We do not come in violence, but we are angry. You will represent us or you will be replaced with someone who will. There are candidates among us when hewill rise like a Phoenix from the ashes that you have made of our constitution.

Democrat, Republican, independent, libertarian. Understand this. We don't care. Political parties are meaningless to us. Patriotic Americans are willing to do right by us and our Constitution and that is all that matters to us now. We are going to fire all of you who abuse power and seek more. It is not your power. It is ours and we want it back. We entrusted you with it and you abused it. You are dishonorable. You are dishonest. As Americans we are ashamed of you. You have brought shame to us. If you are not representing the wants and needs of your constituency loudly and consistently, in spite of the objections of your party, you will be fired. Did you hear? We no longer care about your political parties. You need to be loyal to us, not to them. Because we will get you fired and they will not save you. If you do or can represent me, my issues, my views, please stand up. Make your identity known. You need to make some noise about it. Speak up. I need to know who you are. If you do not speak up, you will be herded out with the rest of the sheep and we will replace the whole damn congress if need be one by one. We are coming. Are we coming for you? Who do you represent? What do you represent? Listen. Because we are coming. We the people are coming.

What You Should Do Now!

I pray that what appears to be happening doesn't.  The eruption of violence at the Pelosi meeting, plus the demonstrations against the AZ law, the SEIU interference at the voting place plus other events suggest that forces for and against progressivism may be headed to more widespread violence.  So I suggest you be prepared!

Establish a contingency plan

1) if your family is separated during the day, establish a meeting point somewhere outside the metropolitan area like a park or small town where you can meet.

2) Get a means of communication other than a cell phone, (you may purchase a ham radio, it is legal to use them in an emergency without a license).

3) Set up code phrases with your family to use to verify whether or not you are free and are telling the truth and to trigger your contingency plan.

4) Discuss with your family events which will trigger actions on your part to leave the area. Loss of communication or takeover of communications by government agencies coupled with reports of widespread violence usually serve as good clues.

5) Have a days provisions, food and clothing, available so you can leave within an hour.

6) Pray that this situation does not get uglier.

What You should know before you vote!

Editors note: This article was first published in October 2008. To my knowledge, these questions have not been answered as of September 1, 2012.

Now is the time for you to try to contain some of the damage that has been done by our government up to now.

First, I have not been this concerned about an election since Lyndon Johnson promised to “Take from the Haves, and give to the Have-Nots”, clearly a socialist direction for our country. Now, I again am concerned that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi may capture the power to take us even faster than ever toward a socialist country and ultimately remove the opportunities for our children for which we have fought, and so many of our military have died. So as a voter, and someone who is concerned about your children’s and grandchildren’s futures you deserve some answers to the following questions from Obama and the Democratic Party.

1. Who paid for Obama’s education at Occidental and Columbia? Then Harvard Law? During that time, who financed his “Around the World” trip? Having helped my 2 children’s college education, and being in the middle class, I know what the strain is on the family. Then, if you were to assume student financing, how could he afford to buy a $1.6 million home? Note that at the same time Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama’s new home was purchased.

<<<<>>>>

2. Obama claims to be a Christian. As such I expect him to be guided by Judao-Christian principals. What biblical authority does Obama use to justify his desire to steal from one group of citizens and give to others (”spread the wealth” , an answer given to Joe plumber asking what Obama was going to do for the small businessman)? What is “fair” about taking a larger percentage of an income just because the income is greater? That a person who makes $50 an hour pays $5 in taxes but a man that makes $100 an hour pays $15 in taxes doesn't seem fair to me.

<<<<>>>>

3. Obama has repudiated his long-time minister and mentor, Jeremiah Wright, and even left the church of which he has been a long time member. But does he repudiate the “Liberation Theology” with which the church is associated — specifically the following tenants: Note that Michelle Obama has said that her husband has not changed.

“To be Christian is to be one of those whom God has chosen. God has chosen black people!”

“Black hatred is the black man’s strong aversion to white society. No black man living in white America can escape it…But the charge of black racism cannot be reconciled with the facts. While it is true that blacks do hate whites, black hatred is not racism.

“We cannot solve ethical questions of the twentieth century by looking at what Jesus did in the first. Our choices are not the same as his. Being Christians does not mean following ‘in his steps.’”

“Therefore, simply to say that Jesus did not use violence is no evidence relevant to the condition of black people as they decide on what to do about white oppression.”

“The Christian does not decide between violence and nonviolence, evil and good. He decides between the less and the greater evil.”

“‘People should love each other’ sounds like Riis Park at sundown. It has very little meaning to the world at large.”

“All white men are responsible for white oppression.”

“The white structure of this American society, personified in every racist, must be at least part of what the New Testament meant by the demonic forces.”

“If there is any contemporary meaning of the Antichrist (or “the principalities and powers”), the white church seems to be a manifestation of it. It was the white “Christian” church which took the lead in establishing slavery as an institution and segregation as a pattern in society by sanctioning all-white congregations.”

“Whether the American system is beyond redemption we will have to wait and see. But we can be certain that black patience has run out, and unless white America responds positively to the theory and activity of Black Power, then a bloody, protracted civil war is inevitable.”

“The revolution which Black Theology advocates … [means] confronting white racists and saying: ‘If it’s a fight you want, I am prepared to oblige you.’ This is what the black revolution means.”

“Black Power seeks not understanding but conflict; addresses blacks and not whites; seeks to develop black support, but not white good will.”

There is no use for a God who loves white oppressors the same as oppressed blacks. We have had too much of white love, the love that tells blacks to turn the other cheek and go the second mile. What we need is the divine love as expressed in black power, which is the power of blacks to destroy their oppressors, here and now, by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject God’s love.”

If Barack Obama has repudiated or does repudiate these tenants(quotes for which I will give references if you wish), which would be a conversion only realized during the period he has been running for president (or during the first two years of his presidency), then he may be trusted to be the leader of the free world and President of the United States. If not, and with the support of the congressional majorities, we are looking at the likelihood of the end of the United States that we inherited, one of constitutional protections of individual rights, freedom, and the promise of the free enterprise (capitalistic) system.

Do not trust this site.  If you find documentation and evidence that President Obama does repudiate these tenants, we would like to know.  So we implore you to answer these questions to your own satisfaction.
